Officials on Thursday celebrated the opening of a new housing option for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The six-unit Leavitt Apartments, 1032 Leavitt Ave., in Flossmoor, was described as the first such venture of its kind in Illinois, offering an independent living setting for persons with developmental disabilities, according to the Illinois Housing Development Authority and New Star Services.
Trinity Services, Inc. officially broke ground on Trinity Park Vista, a permanent supportive housing development in Northlake, on Jan. 16.
The state-of-the-art apartment building will offer three floors and a total of 16 units for residents with disabilities, who will be offered subsidized rent.
Trinity Services has addressed the significant need for independent housing and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in New Lenox, Illinois. Prairie Trail at The Landings, which is comprised of 22 one-bedroom and three three-bedroom units, provides an alternative to group homes and other institutional settings.

Thane Dykstra, president and CEO of Trinity Services in New Lenox said the community offers 22 one-bedroom and three-bedroom units. Each has its own bathroom, kitchen, living space and storage. Each floor has its own washer and dryer, and the second floor has a recreation area that includes a pool table.
Orland Park officials joined Sertoma Centre staff to open a new supportive housing unit in the south suburbs.
The Union Avenue Apartments are located at 14205 South Union Street and open for residents with intellectual or other disabilities. Illinois Housing Development Authority and Housing Authority of Cook County officials were also at the grand opening April 19.
